Village History: Bjerreby Mølle
As a machine, Bjerreby turbine bears witness to one of the early stages in the history of wind technology.
Since the 1600s, there has been a mill here, beautifully located on a small hill between Rudkøbing and Tullebølle.
The history
Bjerreby Mill has a unique feature compared to other mills, as it does not stand on a brick foundation, but instead on a bed of boulders. Another unusual feature is that the mill has been thatched, as the only one of the Langeland mills.
In addition, the mill has been one of the more successful mills on Langeland in economic terms, as there have always been servants at the mill farm as far back as the census records go. The economic prosperity of the mill can also be seen in the farmhouse, outbuildings and the large paved courtyard.
The mill was built in 1819 and the restoration work has endeavoured to recreate the appearance the mill had back then. The wings are particularly eye-catching with their 34 cubic metre span, making Bjerreby one of the largest mills on Langeland.
In addition to the mill, a bakery was also run in the 1800s, but the mill was shut down after World War II.
